Handel's "Rinaldo" at Carnegie Hall

The English Concert performs Georg Frederic Handel's Rinaldo, featuring soloists Iestyn Davies, Jane Archibald, Sasha Cooke, Joelle Harvey, Jakub Jozef Orlinski, and Luca Pisaroni

Handel knew how to put on a show. With Rinaldo, the first Italian opera written for the London stage, he created a thrilling crowd-pleaser. Rinaldo dazzles with its expressive arias, like the plaintive “Lascia ch’io pianga,” one of the most popular soprano arias ever written. Rinaldo’s spectacular instrumental writing is unsurpassed, with rousing trumpets, drums, strings, and oboe in the martial aria “Or la tromba” and show-stopping harpsichord pyrotechnics—originally improvised by Handel—in the fiery aria “Vo’ far guerra.”

"Orphée et Eurydice" at Chicago Lyric Opera

Maestro Harry Bicket conducts the Chicago Lyric Opera production of "Orphée et Eurydice"

One of opera’s most beautiful masterpieces, Gluck’s exquisite drama introduces us to Orpheus, the poet and musician whose every word and note communicate the most overwhelming love for his Eurydice. Refusing to accept her death, he courageously journeys to the Underworld to bring her back to life. The music reaches true heights of eloquence and emotion. Lyric presents Orphée et Eurydice in the Paris version, which contains thrilling ballet sequences that will come to vivid life under the direction and choreography of the legendary John Neumeier. This highly anticipated production marks Lyric’s first collaboration with The Joffrey Ballet.
